The team at Access Knowledge Africa extends its gratitude to Ms.Victoria Sekitoleko, who recently donated 211 books to our library. The books are a mix of novels, storybooks and textbooks. These books will be greatly appreciated by the community, especially the novels, as we have some avid readers in the community who have read all of the novels we currently have in stock.
Ms.Sekitoleko, former Minister of Agriculture in the Ugandan government, is the founder of an organization called Uganda ...

The purpose of our movie nights is to build community, promote our programs and services and to provide a stage for guest speakers, most often staff from Grace Family Health Centre who will inform the audience about various health issues during movie intermissions. We plan to show movies that have...

Off-Site Training Initiative

Posted by Wendy Hiebert on Saturday, August 16, 2014,

The management team at Sir Appollo Kagwa Secondary School recently approached our organization to request assistance in their computer lab.  The school was fortunate to receive a donation of computers from a Uganda government partner; however, the teachers were not provided with any training. This meant that the computer lab was not being utilized to its full potential. Some of the students were attending classes at our facility and suggested that school management contact us and request supp...

Posted by Wendy Hiebert on Friday, February 28, 2014,
Our iPad Program is a success so far! Approximately 20 children are accessing the iPads each day, typically in groups of 3-4 and with instruction from a teacher. Most of these children are Buiga Sunrise students; however, other children in the village are being shown how to use the iPads as well.
At this stage in our program, the children are primarily using educational apps. Part of our long range plan is to teach them how to create content using the iPads, so that they are not solely consum...

Library Outreach Project

Posted by Wendy Hiebert on Saturday, November 30, 2013,
We recently embarked on a library outreach project to local primary and secondary schools. The majority of schools in Uganda are lacking books and this makes our library at Access Knowledge Africa all the more valuable. We have a good selection of textbooks that students do not have access to in their schools, so we encourage them to come to our library to study. Last week, we visited a number of schools so that we could encourage students to use our library and computer lab. We donated a pac...

iPad Program

Posted by Wendy Hiebert on Wednesday, November 27, 2013,
Last week, we added two iPads to our program, specifically to be used by children. The iPads were well received and it was amazing to see how quickly the children learned how to use them.
We are choosing to educate children with iPads instead of computers for the following reasons:
1. When enclosed in a heavy duty case, the iPads are quite resilient and therefore well suited to a hot and dusty environment.
2. The iPads are easy to control with mobile device management software. Our iPads are lo...

2012 Graduation Ceremony

Posted by Wendy Hiebert on Thursday, January 31, 2013,
We recently awarded advanced certificates to 70 students.
This large number of graduates was possible because of our new lab which consists of ten computer stations equipped with two servers, as well as new batteries and an inverter which ensure a constant supply of power.
The graduates expressed thanks for the opportunity to access low-cost computer classes in their community, as it is very expensive to travel to Kampala to obtain computer skills. Many of the graduates also mentioned that the...

Book Time

Posted by Wendy Hiebert on Wednesday, December 19, 2012,

Below are some photos from “Book Time”; an initiative of our Community Library. During this time, a variety of books are distributed to children and they spend about 30 minutes looking through the books. A story is then read to them by Roger or by one of the Buiga Sunrise teachers. The intent of this program is to develop a love of reading and writing in the community.

Many of the books used during Book Time were carefully selected and generously donated to Buiga Sunrise by Mary Wilkens ...

The Need for Computer-Related Training in Uganda

Posted by Wendy Hiebert on Tuesday, August 16, 2011,
People often ask us whether or not the computer training that our students do actually makes a difference in their lives. While Neil and I are both strong proponents of education for the sake education, people typically want a more concrete answer. The following are some recent quotes from students who have taken computer training through Access Knowledge Africa:

I came to this computer class when I knew little about computers. I can now type at a faster rate, find most of the programs by myse...

How it all began...

Posted by Wendy Hiebert on Thursday, April 14, 2011,
Well, this isn't exactly news, but I thought I should provide some background about how Access Knowledge Africa came to fruition. It all began in the spring of 2009...
Neil and I traveled to Uganda to volunteer at Buiga Sunrise Community Programs, an organization which was founded by Neil's cousin, Nicole Van Seters. Sunrise, as it is most commonly referred to, is an organization which aims to reduce poverty through a combination of education and income generating initiatives. You can find out...
